Saskatchewan Advocate For Children and Youth

The Advocate for Children and Youth is an Independent Officer of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The Advocate leads a team of professionals to advocate for the rights, interests, and well-being of children and youth in Saskatchewan.
The mandate is defined by The Advocate for Children and Youth Act.
They do:

  • Advocacy on behalf of children and youth receiving services from a provincial ministry, agency of the government, or publicly-funded health entity.
  • Investigations into any matter concerning, or services provided to, children and youth by a provincial ministry, agency of the government, or publicly funded health entity.
  • Public Education to raise awareness of the rights, interests, and well-being of children and youth.
  • Research and Advise on any matter relating to the rights, interests, and well-being of children and youth.

4 DCFS Inc. and the Saskatchewan Advocate For Children and Youth

4 DFCS Inc. has a Rights of the Residents Served Plan with policies and procedures that are intended to fulfill the following purpose:

  • 4 Directions Child & Family Services Inc.(4 DCFS Inc.) is committed to respecting and protecting the rights of children and youth served under its programs. This commitment guides all continued interactions with children and youth as residents while staying at 4 DCFS Inc.
  • 4 DCFS Inc. has developed the Rights of Persons Served Policy with the outcome to comply with all International, Canadian Federal and Provincial laws and regulations pertaining to privacy of an individual, and any compliances stipulated by contractual agreements.
  • 4 DCFS Inc. documents all administrative and service-related information in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements including Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), The Health Information Protection Act (HIPA), United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child and United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

As part of the policies and procedures that address the rights of the persons served, residents have approved contact with the Saskatchewan Advocate for Children and Youth.  Each program ensures that residents can communicate privately and freely with the Saskatchewan Advocate who are able to provide advise and advocacy on their behalf.  4 DCFS Inc. will not deny access to the Advocate by any resident and will not limit the number of phone conversations or contacts.

At time of orientation with the children and youth, information is provided to each new resident regarding what the Saskatchewan Advocate For Children and Youth services include, and how and when they can be contacted.  The information is presented within the capacity that it is understood by the child or youth
